TouchMath: Forty Years of Turning Helplessness into Hope

More than five decades ago, I was an elementary school teacher searching for a better way to shepherd my students through beginning math –– a self-esteem robbing ordeal for far too many children.

Then came an idea. I placed counting points on numbers to help certain students understand how a symbol represents a quantity. To my delight, it clicked! This simple idea brought almost immediate results. I had discovered a new way to teach children the critical transition from concrete to symbolic learning. A new multisensory math was born—TouchMath!

Years of research and classroom testing followed, and TouchMath grew from a handful of basic activities to what is now an extensive family of hundreds of grade level programs, classroom aids, and technology. The materials cover counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, story problems, time, money and fractions — all at many different grade and ability levels.

Our mission has evolved from a focus on children with learning disabilities to programs for children of different aptitudes, learning styles, and cultures. Today, you can find TouchMath in all 50 states and in many foreign countries.

As different as they can be, all children have one very important desire in common: They want to learn. They want the right answer. They want to do their best. Our purpose is to not disappoint them.

During the next thirty years, our goal is to help banish math anxiety worldwide, whether that anxiety is born of fear, lack of comprehension, or a learning disability. We really do believe that hope springs eternal.

TouchMath is unique, available only from Innovative Learning Concepts, and of course, unconditionally guaranteed to help your students succeed.

Thank you for your interest in TouchMath.

Core programs with step-by-step lesson plans and scaffolded student activity sheets cover all standards and critical math concepts. Classroom aids and manipulatives offer different, targeted, more accessible learning avenues. Technology components involve students in the process and make learning interactive, fun, and meaningful. These three elements can be thought of as the pillars of TouchMath. Each standing strong on their own, or coming together to create the most versatile and effective math program on the market.

  • Core Programs
  • At the heart of TouchMath are our core grade-level programs. Available in both print and digital versions, we offer two lines: CCSS TouchMath for those looking to teach to the Common Core State Standards; and RtI TouchMath for those in need of a supplemental program for intervention and remediation. Across all TouchMath curricula, teachers can expect teaching guides with ready-made lesson plans and teaching strategies, and students can expect scaffolded, step-by-step activity sheets with age-appropriate artwork –– all coming together to make math fun and inspire success-driven confidence. Because of the depth and breadth of the topics covered in our core materials, they can comfortably be used as your go-to math curriculum, or simply wrap around your current math program for added skill reinforcement. Our core programs are available for pre-K, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and upper grades.

  • Classroom Aids and Manipulatives
  • Designed specifically to produce results among students of all learning styles, students truly see, say, hear, touch, and learn with TouchMath’s vibrant classroom aids and manipulatives. A cornerstone of the TouchMath Program, the hands-on classroom aids complement the core programs or stand on their own as great independent learning tools. TouchMath is the only program that uses the actual numeral as a manipulative, instantly making math real, relational, and concrete for all learners.

  • Technology
  • Reinforce, remediate, and challenge students with TouchMath’s technology components. TouchMath technology includes software, an interactive whiteboard program, and mobile tablet apps –– all giving you the ability to differentiate lessons for whole group, small group, and one-to-one instruction. Likewise, you can provide individual re-teaching opportunities and advanced level work. These dynamic and interactive learning channels provide meaningful practice and review, and keep students interested, involved, and motivated.
