### Unit 3 Details:

• 150 reproducible student activity sheets
• Implementation guide
• 6 module guides complete with lesson plans, strategies and answer keys
• Pre- and Posttests for each module

### Module Details:

• Module 1: Composing, Decomposing, and Comparing 10
• This module focuses on Composing and Decomposing Numbers. The same processes are used to build and break down 10 that were used in Unit 2, Module 5. Whole/part relationships are built throughout the process. Composing and decomposing numbers extend the understanding of a number system and contribute to strategies for accurate computation in addition and subtraction. Also in this module is a focus on 10, basic to understanding our number system. The experiences in this module contribute to an understanding of place value and establish the groundwork for understanding regrouping in addition and subtraction.
• Module 2: Writing and Comparing 10–15
• This module focuses on Writing and Comparing Numbers 10–15. This includes associating quantities and numerals. It builds on the foundation that was started in Unit 1 Module 3 that taught writing and comparing numbers 1–5, and in Unit 2 Module 1 that extended the work with numbers through 9. Children continue using activities to associate groups of objects and numbers. These activities incorporate the use of pictures, moving gradually from counters into more abstract representations. Practice writing the numbers is also emphasized. Dotted lines for tracing are used to indicate how to form the number. Additionally, children begin to compare the groups of objects and their numbers.
• Module 3: Writing and Comparing 16–20
• This module focuses on Writing and Comparing Numbers 16–20. This includes associating quantities and numerals. It builds on the foundation that was started in Unit 1 Module 3 that taught writing and comparing numbers 1–5, in Unit 2 Module 1 that extended the work with numbers through 9, and in Unit 3 Module 2 that presented numbers 10–15. Children continue using activities to associate groups of objects and numbers. These activities incorporate the use of pictures, moving gradually from counters into more abstract representations. Practice writing the numbers is also emphasized. Dotted lines for tracing are used to indicate how to form the number.
• Module 4: Place Value 10–20
• This module focuses on Place Value 10–20. Various place value models are used to demonstrate how the numbers from 10–20 are comprised of a bundle of 10 and further ones. The models used include straws in a bundle, math fans, sticks in a cup, beads on a string, gumballs in a machine, and linking cubes. The lessons progress from showing the 10 in a bundle (that can be counted) to representation of the bundle with 10 on it. The equations with the representations are included for tracing so that children associate the model with numbers.
• Module 5: Composing and Decomposing 11–20
• This module focuses on Composing and Decomposing Numbers 11–20. The same processes are used that were introduced and reinforced in Unit 3 Module 1, and Unit 2 Module 5. The module extends the learning on Place Value. Whole/part relationships are built throughout the process. Composing and decomposing numbers extend the understanding of a number system and contribute to strategies for accurate computation in addition and subtraction.
• Module 6: Adding and Subtracting in Word Problems
• This module focuses on Adding and Subtracting in Word Problems. The activities incorporate the learning in the previous modules, especially adding and subtracting using pictures. Cutting and pasting pictures to demonstrate the operation are presenting initially. The “quantities” are recorded with a ring around the numbers with the TouchPoints to reinforce understanding of putting together or taking apart. Simple word problems are on each page with pictures used to represent the problem. In all, are left, and how many are consistently used for word recognition.
