Module 1: Describing and Comparing Objects by Length and Weight
This module focuses on Describing and Comparing Objects by Length and Weight. Children describe objects by length using measurable attributes, such as counting spots on a giraffe or marks on a monkey’s tail. They compare the lengths of objects, using more or less to describe their differences. The concept of measuring length using a ruler is introduced, with the students using a ruler they cut out and then describing the length of an object by counting how many marks long it is. The concept of objects sinking and floating is used to help the students describe the weight of objects. They decide whether objects sink or float to determine if they are light or heavy, or to decide which object is heavier or lighter than the other.

Module 2: Sorting and Classifying Objects by Length and Weight
This module focuses on Classifying Objects by Length and Weight. The activities incorporate and extend the learning in the previous module. Children classify objects by length, using measurable attributes, such as counting stripes on straws and beads on a string, and by how many things fit on an object, such as a tree branch or a shelf. They compare the lengths of objects, identifying them as long, medium, or short and counting to determine how many objects are sorted into each category. The concept of classifying objects by weight and determining if they are light or heavy, or in between (medium) is introduced through such real-world scenarios such as comparing weights of common fruits, vehicles, and classroom objects.

Module 3: Interpreting Data
This module focuses on Interpreting Data. The activities incorporate and extend the learning in Module 2. The students classify shapes using manipulatives, identifying such attributes as number of sides and corners and sizes such as small, medium, and large to sort and find how many in each category, or group. The concepts of classifying and sorting objects by counting is then extended by using pictures of real-world objects.

Module 4: Describing Shapes in the Environment
This module focuses on Describing Shapes in the Environment. The six featured 2-D shapes are circle, triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus, and cylinder. The four featured 2-D shapes are sphere, cone, cube, and cylinder. The Suggested Pre-Activities for the first two objectives use music, movement, arts and crafts, and games to make learning engaging and fun. The first group of pages for each, offers the students ample practice naming, describing, and recognizing the shapes, plus opportunities to find them in the everyday world. The third objective instructs the students how to describe the positions of objects using words such as above, below, inside and outside, over and under, and middle.

Module 5: Mastering 2-D Shapes
This module focuses on Mastering 2-D Shapes. The four featured shapes are circle, triangle, square, and rectangle. The Suggested Pre-Activities for the first objective use movement, arts and crafts, and games to make learning engaging and fun. The first group of pages offers the students ample practice naming, describing, and recognizing the shapes, plus opportunities to find them in the everyday world. The second and third objectives instruct the students how to compose larger shapes using smaller shapes, moving from using TouchShape manipulatives to paper models.

Module 6: Mastering 3-D Shapes
This module focuses on Mastering 3-D Shapes. The four featured shapes are sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. The Suggested Pre-Activities use movement, arts and crafts, and games to make learning engaging and fun. The first page for each shape provides a paper model (net) that the teacher can cut out and fold to help the students identify the attributes of each 3-D shape. The second page in each shape’s set provides ways for the student to distinguish the specified shape from other 3-D shapes. Shading is used to create the 3-D effect. The third page of each set requires students to match sizes of the 3-D shape. Review pages give the students opportunities to find the 3-D shapes in the everyday world.
