Why Teach TouchMath to Kindergarteners?
What if your wide-eyed kindergarteners believed that math is fun and friendly? What if they could tackle math problems usually intended for older children? What if you could give them a love of math that would last a lifetime?

This is exactly what Lisa Beck and her kindergarten students at the Monticello Academy in Santa Clara, CA, are experiencing using TouchMath.

Big results for little people.
"It's easy to teach math by rote, but it doesn't become concrete and internalized," comments Lisa. "With TouchMath, however, children learn that 2 is not just a number; it is a concept, a quantity. Students can apply this knowledge to any skill and graduate to higher levels of math without being apprehensive. We're introducing 3-column addition with regrouping to our kindergarteners and it's not a struggle for them."

Lisa and her colleagues at Monticello Academy have discovered how TouchMath can help all students understand math, regardless of background or learning style.

Don't underestimate the potential of a kindergartener.
Research has shown that most young children have a tremendous capacity for understanding numerical relationships. The TouchMath Program has been proven to accelerate math comprehension among general and special education students of all abilities and learning styles. Many students progress to more advanced skills generally introduced in first and second grades.

Encourage memorization along with comprehension.
Most children entering kindergarten can count by memory and identify numerals up to 20. But do they know what the numerals really mean? TouchMath not only encourages memorization — it goes further by developing student understanding of underlying concepts.

Give real meaning to abstract symbols.
Using pictorial objects and our signature TouchPoints, we teach children to associate numerals with real values. They learn that a numeral (3, for instance) is not just a squiggle on a page. It represents a quantity such as three apples, three ladybugs, three buttons or three TouchPoints.

Counting is the key.
Once students learn the meaning of numerals and have mastered the TouchPoint Touching/Counting Patterns, they can quickly use their counting skills to add two or more numbers. Many kindergarteners can even add one or two columns of numbers, subtract and multiply – skills usually introduced in later grades.

Using pictorial objects and our trademarked TouchPoints, we teach young children to associate numerals with real values (number quantities).
