 SECOND GRADE INFORMATION
Why Teach Touchmath to Second-Graders?
What if your second-graders could progress to more advanced math skills like multiplication without developing math anxiety? What if they could pass through this critical learning crossroad with competence and confidence?

Experts in the fields of education and psychology — from Piaget and Bruner to Grabert and his peers — encourage the use of the multisensory and sequential learning strategies that are the foundation of the TouchMath Program.

"Treatment and educational programs produce the best outcomes when they teach skills in a series of simple, sequential steps; engage the child's attention in structured activities; build on a child's interests; and reinforce behavior," comments pediatric neurologist Brian Grabert, M.D.

  Cultivate a positive attitude.
By second grade, most students either like or dislike math. As you introduce multiplication and division, they form even stronger opinions. When they can answer problems correctly on a consistent basis, they learn to associate math with positive feelings. TouchMath builds the crucial understanding of math that translates into success.

Identify and address problems.
If your students are still struggling with addition and subtraction in the second grade, it is likely because:
  • They are unable to connect a numeric symbol with a real quantity
  • They have not yet grasped the basics of our mathematics system
  • They forget memorized facts. They guess instead of knowing how to reach the correct answer.
These children need to relearn basic numerical concepts using a new approach. It's time to introduce them to TouchMath!

Stay flexible.
Many second-graders still need tactile/kinesthetic reinforcement and will touch and count on the TouchPoints. Some can visualize the TouchPoints and use them as an invisible resource. Others are ready to leave them behind completely and reach memory mastery. This flexibility is one more reason why TouchMath is effective in general second-grade classrooms, intervention programs and special education.

Use the right tools to introduce more advanced skills.
In second grade, some students are able to comprehend and memorize more abstract concepts and mathematical operations such as multiplication. Our TouchMath sequence counting materials make it easier for students to build on their basic counting skills to understand multiplication. Once students grasp the concepts underlying multiplication, they can work on memorization.

Collaborate with your colleagues.
When TouchMath is used throughout the primary grades, students benefit from the consistency, repetition and reinforcement. Schools and districts using TouchMath system-wide have experienced dramatic increases in math test scores.

Using TouchPoints, students are able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
