# Standards-Based First Grade Unit 3

## First Grade Unit 3: Numeracy Level 3

TM2024W

Far too often, math becomes a guessing game for students. With TouchMath, your students won’t feel like they need to guess. This unit blends the multisensory TouchMath strategy with interesting and involving activities and strategies — so you can teach, and your students can learn, in effective and efficient ways. The final first grade computation unit completes the first grade standards for strategies and relationships in numeracy, as well as addition and subtraction skills, through 100. Activities include an emphasis on concrete and pictorial problems, TouchMath techniques with visual cues, as well as other computation strategies.

### Unit 3 Details:

• A brand-new day-by-day C-R-A directed Teacher's Manual makes step-by-step multi-sensory teaching easy.
• Pre- and Posttests for each module measure successes.
• 150 teacher/student approved activity masters engage all learners.
• Six complete modules divided by easy topics.

### Module Details:

• Module 1: Place Value
• The activities in this module incorporate place value models and charts used in conjunction with pictorial representations. Concrete objects and pictorial models to blend the concrete/representational approaches. The models are familiar to the students. The activities expand the practice of using bundles for each decade sequentially from 20 to 100: straws for numbers within 50, beads for numbers 50–80; linking cubes for numbers 80–100; and base 10 for 100–120. Place value charts, place value forms, expanded forms, and standard numbers are related throughout the cluster.

• Module 2: Addition Within 100
• Building on Module 1, this unit includes joining two two-digit addends using familiar manipulatives and pictorial models. Place value charts continue to be used. An arrow indicating to start with the ones column is introduced. Although the children could work from left to right by combining the tens and then the ones, the TouchMath approach presents addition of the ones to provide consistency in applying the steps in computation. Word problems, comparisons, and true/false activities are included.

• This module extends the concepts and skills introduced in the previous module. Place value, cues, and TouchPoints continue to be integrated. It introduces three single-digit addends with TouchPoints on the two lesser numbers. Guided practice with numerous examples includes word problems and a missing addend as an unknown. Sums are within 10 and then 20. Consistent application of addition and problem skills is reinforced throughout the practice. The learning is then scaffolded to two-digit addends with no regrouping.

• This module focuses on Addition Strategies. The activities extend the concepts and skills introduced in the previous module. Word problems, decomposing numbers, and mental math are emphasized throughout the module. It provides guide practice with number families, doubles, decomposing addends to find sums, and reinforcing the grouping of smaller addends using the associative property. The commutative property is introduced in number families. All of these strategies are presented with one-digit addends to build learner success in integrating various approaches.

• Module 5: Subtraction Within 100
• This module focuses on Subtraction within 100. The activities mirror those for Addition within 100. Place value and addition on one-digit numbers are integrated and extended. It includes taking away one part of the whole using manipulatives and pictorial models. Place value charts continue to be used. An arrow indicating to start with the ones column is repeated from the addition activities. Crossing out the number of objects in the subtrahend from the minuend is modeled and practiced. The TouchMath approach presents completing the operations with the ones, then the tens to avoid confusion when regrouping is needed. Word problems, comparisons, and true/false activities are included.

• Module 6: Subtraction Strategies
• This module focuses on Subtraction Strategies. The activities extend the concepts and skills introduced in the previous module. They mirror the activities in Module 4 (Addition Strategies) and Module 3 (Mixed Addition). The unit continues to build the relationship between addition and subtraction in developing numeracy. Relationships of and patterns with numbers in the operations are integrated. The relationships include number families, missing addends, multiples of 10, TouchPoints, cues, and unknowns. Place value is emphasized throughout the module. Word problems, comparisons, and true/false apply problem solving skills.

• Module 7: Mixed Computation Within 100
• This module focuses on Addition and Subtraction within 100. The activities integrate the skills, strategies, and concepts presented in numeracy throughout first grade. It applies place value, relationships and strategies to find unknowns in addition. Multiple addends are also practiced. Mixed strategies are included for practice and application in finding unknowns in subtraction. It mixes the operations, focuses on problem solving strategies in word problems, and extends understanding of relationships and values in comparisons.
