Develops counting and writing numbers, plus addition and subtraction within 9. All activities are based on the well-researched C-R-A (Concrete, Representational-Abstract) approach to ensure success for every learner. The unique one-step-at-a time approach has helped teachers clarify math for years. Employs activities without and with TouchMath techniques and cues.
Module Details:
Module 1: Counting to 120
This module focuses on counting, reading, and writing 1-120. The scaffolded activities include tracing, writing numbers, identifying and writing missing addends, and counting from any number. They offer a variety of experiences with sequential counting by ones as children finish dot-to-dot pictures and find their way through mazes. Students will also practice counting forward from a given number in a number sequence and identifying missing numbers, progressing to counting to 120. Module 1 provides a good foundation for the activities in the following modules.
Module 2: Mastering TouchPoints
This module focuses on representing quantities with TouchPoints. The emphasis is on associating and representing a number of objects with a written number and a word name. The activities introduce students to multiple representations of a number, progressing from the object itself, to the object as a TouchPoint, to a circular TouchPoint that is colored, and to the TouchPoint number itself. Comparing quantities is also included, using various representations of the quantities and symbols to be colored. When children finish this module, they will have experienced visual, auditory, and kinesthetic experiences as they learn that there are multiple ways to represent numbers.
Module 3: Adding and Subtracting Within 5
The activities in this module build the concepts of addition and subtraction, scaffolding the learning every step of the way. Students begin by using pictures to show adding to or taking away groups of objects, followed by the objects with an addition or subtraction sign, then the transfer of this concept to using objects as TouchPoints. Finally the transition is made to using only number TouchPoints. The part-part-whole relationship is explored and reinforced and is used to show the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Module 4: Adding Within 9
Incorporating the learning from previous modules, this module focuses on adding within 9. The emphasis in addition is on counting quantities to find the total and transferring this concept to using pictorial and finally TouchPoint numbers. Word problems using rebuses are introduced to demonstrate application of addition sentences in real world situations. Missing addends are also introduced, and comparing numbers is included. Writing the sum of the addends is presented as a strategy for selecting the proper comparison symbol. Counting on is suggested as a method for finding the individual sums.
Module 5: Subtracting Within 9
Providing an introduction to subtracting within 9, this module emphasizes taking away from the whole, and transferring that concept to using TouchPoints to count backward. The process is introduced by using darkened objects to represent taking away before progressing to crossing out the objects. Backward counting is presented with arrows indicating how many are being taken away from the largest number. After that, backward counting and subtracting with TouchPoints on the subtrahend are used together for multiple reinforcement of the concept. Word problems and comparisons continue to be included.
Module 6: Adding and Subtracting Within 9
This module provides a mixed review of adding and subtracting within 9. The activities incorporate the learning in the previous modules — the emphasis in addition is on combining groups and in subtraction is on taking away from the whole. These concepts are then transferred to using TouchPoints to count quantities to find the total and to find how many are left. The module concludes with mixed addition and subtraction on each page. Students are led to ring the operation sign before beginning the computation, and comparisons are incorporated throughout the pages. When children complete this module, they will have had many experiences that contribute to their mastery of adding and subtracting fluently within 9.
