This unit covers standards for grades 2-6.
The goal of TouchMath Upper Grades Unit 6: Mixed Operations with Whole Numbers is to ensure?proficiency with the four basic operations with whole numbers. The instruction and practice begin?with relationships and properties of pairs of operations. The reinforcement throughout the unit is?then scaffolded sequentially using the number of digits of the numbers in the equations. Previously?introduced strategies are strengthened.
The six modules each provide meaningful repetition and application of the strategies and algorithms?in performing computation, making comparisons (with and without solving equations), finding?unknowns, using 0s in various places, and solving word problems with multi-steps. Place value is?emphasized throughout the activities. The modules are Relationships of Operations, Two-Four Digits?by One Digit, Two-Four Digits by Two Digits, Three-Four Digits by Three Digits, Four Digits, and?Mixed Practice with Operations. The skills advance to estimating, explaining strategies and processes,?reading and applying numbers in the hundred millions, relating the lattice method to place value for?multiplication, and identifying multiple ways to express equations and solutions.
Throughout the unit, formal testing procedures are implemented. Multiple choice and true/false?with bubble answers are incorporated. Other reviews include matching, written answers, selecting?the comparison or operation symbol to be used in an expression or equation, and other?engaging activities.
The unit provides instructional support for learners with disabilities by presenting and allowing?multiple strategies for finding and expressing solutions.
