This unit covers standards for grades 2-6.
The goal of TouchMath Upper Grades Unit 7: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents 1 is to build a strong?foundation with fractions, decimals, and percents. Each of the topics is initially defined as parts of?a whole. The instruction and practice begin with manipulatives and pictorial models. Place value is?emphasized throughout the unit.
The concepts are scaffolded to ensure learner success. Common fractions, mixed numbers, and?improper fractions from wholes through sixteenths are presented. Vocabulary is introduced gradually,?moving from the familiar language to the unfamiliar. Common decimals and mixed decimals from?tenths through thousandths are presented sequentially, along with their fraction equivalents.?Students learn to convert fractions to decimals and to round decimals. Activities introduce learners to?percents less than, equal to, and greater than 100. The unit concludes with the relationships of the?three representations: fractions, decimals, and percents.
Each of the eight modules provides meaningful repetition and application of the strategies to develop?the concepts. The approach follows the TouchMath philosophy of moving from the kinesthetic to?the abstract level, including small steps to ensure the groundwork for application in computation?and word problems. The modules are Fractions Concepts; Application of Concepts; Equality and?Inequality; Mixed Numbers; Fractions Review; Decimals; Percents; and Relationships of Fractions,?Decimals, and Percents.
Throughout the unit, formal testing procedures are implemented. Multiple choice and true/false with?bubble answers are incorporated. Other reviews include matching, written answers, selecting the?comparison symbol to be used in an expression or equation, and other engaging activities.
The unit addresses students with disabilities by providing multiple instructional supports for learning.
