This unit covers standards for grades 4-6.
The goal of TouchMath Upper Grades Unit 8: Fractions, Decimals, and Percents 2 is to ensure?application of the concepts learned in the previous unit, with an emphasis on the relationships among?fractions, decimals, and percents. The instruction and practice begin with pictorial models, with place?value at the core throughout the unit.
The algorithms and operations in problem solving are scaffolded to ensure learner success. Each?number representation is presented individually at first. As the succeeding representation is?presented, relationships are reinforced. Computation is introduced in each number representation,?with comparison/contrast to whole number computation. After practice with computation,?students begin problem solving: word problems, comparisons, and unknowns. Each application is?scaffolded from the least complex to the most complex. Learners use visuals throughout the unit?for computation, interpretation of information in graphs, and completion of graphs, charts, and?tables. The unit concludes with mixed review of all of the number representations, operations, and?applications that were previously practiced individually.
Each of the eight modules provides meaningful repetition and application of the strategies to develop?proficiency. The approach follows the TouchMath philosophy of moving from the pictorial to the?abstract level, including small steps to ensure proficiency with computation and application. The?modules are Addition and Subtraction of Fractions, Multiplication and Division of Fractions, Addition?and Subtraction of Decimals, Multiplication and Division of Decimals, Percents, Mixed Practice?(computation), Application, and Mixed Review.
Formal testing procedures are included throughout the unit with multiple choice and true/false?problems with bubble answers. Other reviews include matching, written answers, selecting the?comparison symbol to be used in an expression or equation, and other engaging activities.
The unit addresses students with disabilities by providing multiple instructional supports for learning,?including step by step procedures for algorithms and visual cues with the various representations.
